How to Find the Correct Scanner Radio for your Area

An easy way to read the information in the Radio Reference Database

What you need to know

This is a question I see often on websites like Radio Reference and on Facebook Groups.

How do I find the correct scanner for me?

Or – I just bought this radio, will it work?

Or – Why can’t I hear my local police, what is wrong with my new radio?

Or – How come nobody told me this wouldn’t work!?!?

In this podcast, we’ll decode some of the information in the Radio Reference Database so you can pick the right scanner for your area.

If you have any questions, here is a script that you can use:

Hello,

I am new into scanning and I am looking to buy a new scanner, but I've noticed that the trunk system in my area has a few simulcast sites.

I live in _______________ and I am looking to listen to the ________________ trunk system.

Am I able to use an older generation P25 scanner on this system, or do I need to invest in the SDS100 or SDS200 to get reliable reception on this system?

I understand that on many simulcast sites the non-IQ scanner such as the BCD325P2 and the BCD996P2 will not work and the only way to receive them is with a scanner that uses IQ technology.

Thank you for the help.
