Welcome to my honest Uniden SDS100 Review

You are here early, and so was mu new Uniden SDS100!

I received my SDS100 on June 6th.  This SDS100 Review page will be built up as I have more time with the radio.

Because this page is currently under constant revision, I would like to offer you a link to my e-mail list.

In this e-mail list I will be sending you my hands on review and experiences of the Uniden SDS100.

Unboxing and very first impressions

When I received my new radio, I couldn’t wait to sit down and do live SDS100 Unboxing video.  I decided to invite my Facebook audience and share the experience with them.

Here is a copy of that video from YouTube.   Please be sure to subscribe to my channel for future SDS100 videos (I promise to keep them very short!)

What do we know about the scanner so far?

Will simulcast be a problem of the past?

Uniden is pushing this scanner as a solution to a problem that has plagued scanner owners for some time now, and that issue is Simulcast.

Simulcast is where you have multiple transmitter sites transmitting in various locations the same information at the same time.  The problem is that there is a delay in when the transmissions make it to your scanner.   Radio waves travel at the speed of light, not the speed of sound.   Being that RF travels pretty darn fast, one would think that simulcast wouldn’t be a problem.   Well, the data that is being transmitted is coded down to microseconds (or even nanoseconds) and when you add in variables like multi path and other propagational delays, just receiving a transmission a fraction of a second too late could cause a problem when the scanner tries to decode the signal.

We are talking digital modes here, such as P25.  And this can really become a problem when we start talking about Phase 2 P25, because the tolerances become might tighter to get a solid decode on the scanner.

The Uniden SDS100 is built around the same technology that SDR (Software Defined Radios) have been using for some time now to combat simulcast, an I/Q receiver.

If you want to learn more about simulcast, please check out Scanner School Session 18.

More to come….

I will be adding more information to this page as I spend some time with the scanner.   To make sure you are up to date on my review, please be sure to subscribe to my e-mail list.  This list will only be for updates on the SDS100.  I won’t be sending any other types messages via this list.
